Shoemakers

Using census returns and the trade directories Kelly’s and Whites we have found that shoemakers were the most common listed business in Southrepps. Not that a listing in the census is proof that they worked in Southrepps. In 1836 five shoemakers were listed. One was Robert Foulger born in Southrepps in 1816 he continued to make and mend shoes until he was at least 74 some 55 years later. He is listed as a master cordwainer, who is someone who makes new shoes using new leather, whereas a cobbler is someone who repairs shoes. He lived and worked in Upper Street.

The last shoemaker listed is George Reynolds who also lived and worked in Upper Street.
