Author Colin Needham and Margaret Dowland

On the 5th of August 223 children arrived to be educated at Antingham and Southrepps School. 123 children and 14 teachers and helpers, were billeted in Southrepps. Another 100 elementary children from Dagenham High School and their teachers were billeted in Antingham and Thorpe Market.

By the 11th of September the number of younger pupils from Dagenham had dropped to 94.

By the 4th December changes had been made to the teaching arrangements the final entry is on the 3rd June 1940 to record that all the evacuees had returned home.
The 1939 Register taken in September of that year includes the names of evacuees billeted in Southrepps. They arrived shortly before the register was completed. Using date of birth as a guide to school age and surnames noted to be different from the host family 55 children and 11 adult teachers have been identified as living in Southrepps. Of the 29 evacuees who attended the 50th anniversary visit to Antingham and Southrepps School 9 of them are recorded as living in Southrepps in 1939. These are all males as the girls have subsequently married and changed their names
There are numerous redacted entries and some of these may be evacuees. Other children were billeted in the neighbouring villages of Antingham, Bradfield and Thorpe Market.
The names in bold are the returning evacuees
