Today is tomorrow's history

World War One

Author: Chris Shaw

At 11am on the 11th November 1918 hostilities ceased following the signing of the Armistice and the guns fell silent. The following pages descibe the impact of the war on the village.

Summary of Participants

Many of our soldiers, sailors and airmen returned to the village shortly afterwards, however some were retained to maintain the peace and deal with clearing the battlefields.
The ‘Summary of Participants’ sheet shows what we know of 185 persons with a connection to Southrepps who served their country in the Great War. 40 men did not return. Furthermore 29 men were awarded Silver War Badges which means they either suffered from serious injuries or illness. The remainder will probably have suffered from the likes of Shell Shock, now recognised as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), to varying degrees.
