Government Instructional Factories

Author Chris Shaw

St James’s Mill Norwich

At the end of the Great War the British Government recognised that a great number of badly injured soldiers would no longer be able to return to their former employment. Thus it set up a number of Instructional Factories around the country in order to rehabilitate those maimed servicemen and give them new purpose in life.

One such factory was set up in Norwich and used St James’ Mill in Whitefriars formerly owned by Jarrolds.

A number of servicemen from Southrepps spent time here after they returned from their military service.
