William Allen retired to Lower Street in 1933 where his daughter lived. Read about his part in the incredible rescue of the SS Fernebo in January 1917 for which he was awarded a gallantry medal.

We have been comparing the 1841 census the earliest available and the 1921 census to see the changes in the village. Despite having more houses our village population is smaller than it was in 1841. We had valets and servants, errand boys and blacksmiths, lime burners and millwrights. Read about what we have found here.…

Over the years there have been many carpenters and wheelwrights in the village. The earliest we have found to date is Jonathan Duncan in 1819, the 1841 census lists 18. The last ones listed are from the 1920s, Douglas Tuthill, Eddie Bates and Dick Swann. If you know of any we have missed or can…
